A brief history of Lockport
The area known as Lockport was first settled in the 1830s in the area
around where the Barataria and Lafourche Canal Company planned to open a canal off
Bayou Lafourche. The village was originally called Longueville, but after locks were installed
at the canal in the 1850s, its name was changed to Lockport. The town was incorporated on May 10, 1899, with Camille Richard
as its first mayor.
