A brief history of Lafourche Parish government
Although Lafourche Parish was one of the original parishes in Louisiana, it did not adopt a Home Rule
Charter until 1975. The charter ushered in the Parish Council form of government. Prior to the elections in 1980,
the parish was governed by the Police Jury form of government. Under the new form of government, the first Parish President was Richard Egle.
